The qualities of a good insulator

Choosing to apply the good practices of bio construction will be of great help to get a comfortable, healthy and safe ambience in your home. The insulating materials used for this purpose have to protect from winter cold and assure a pleasant housing climate in summer as well; guarantee a proper acoustic insulation; allow the diffusion of humidity in order to prevent damp; be durable in time, which means resistant to mould,  fungus, insects without using synthetic products; and not least to be fire resistant.

The necessity of thermal insulation can be satisfied using products of natural origin that have high insulating qualities, though letting the building transpire. Remember that cement, synthetic plastics and varnishes act as a waterproof barrier, which usually leads to damages related to damp and moulds.

Applying products with hygroscopic features (the capability that some materials have to absorb and give back steam, related to the porosity of plasters, limes, wood and natural fibres) will avoid stagnation of damp on the surfaces, contributing to create a healthy housing climate.

Some natural materials that aren’t harmful for the environment and guarantee an optimal insulation with a high grade of transpirability are: Wood fiber, Flax, Hemp, Float, Coconut fiber, Cellulose.

Chalk-Fiber Plasterboards

The combination of mineral chalk and cellulose fiber gives a very interesting construction material: easy to lay, highly resistant, fireproof plasters for both acoustic and thermal insulation.

The features of their natural and biologically safe raw materials make these plasterboards and ideal way to create screens and indoor finishes of all type. Being hygroscopic (steam absorbent and transpiring), they are also recommended in humid ambiences.
